Exploring professional development of educational administrators in Adventist schools in Sri Lanka : a case study based on Delphi Technique

Abstract

Professional development is a lifelong process that guides school administrators. It is significant because it helps them grow as leaders, adapt to new developments, and stay informed about developments in education. In the context of professional development, Sri Lankan Adventist school administrators recognize their responsibility to improve schools, but they often limit training to leadership development. In Sri Lankan research, professional development opportunities for Adventist school administrators are limited. This two-phase study provides an in-depth exploration of the need for professional development for educational administrators in Adventist schools in Sri Lanka, the skills, the best practices and strategies for delivering professional development, and the training support needed. There is no study on professional development for the Adventist educational context. Therefore, to identify the common elements of professional development, A Delphi study was conducted. Based on findings from the Delphi technique, case study research questions were developed, and a case study was conducted in Sri Lanka to explore in depth the professional development needs of educational administrators in Adventist schools. Findings emerge in nine key themes: Christ-centered spiritual leadership, Pastoral Relational Leadership, Organizational Leadership, Structured Professional, Sustained Leadership Support Development, Faith-Centered Educational Practice, Mission-Aligned Leadership Development, Leadership Professional Skills, and Health Community Engagement, each supported by specific categories. Together, these themes highlight the professional development needs of education administrators in Adventist schools in Sri Lanka. A framework was developed that drew on the nine themes. This framework provides a clear, organized view of the areas where administrators need training, guidance, and support for professional development, and recommends providing them as needed.
